SolarAcademy Journal (Week 6): Solar Losers = Solar Winners

It’s the 6th week here at SolarAcademy since we officially launched. And lots of good things are in motion for us.

Accomplishments last week:

  • Reached out to a number of solar installers, engineers/designers, entrepreneurs.
  • Engaged a number of them about creating content about their companies and their activities.
  • Scheduled a number of calls and meetings for further meetings.

Things to do this week:

  • Work on the design and elements of our first course which will be targeted to Electrical Contractors.
  • Continue reaching out to installers and identify needs we can serve in the areas of online marketing, video stories, and beyond…
  • Continue coaching and advising existing contacts / clients who are looking for guidance around going solar and entering the solar business.
  • Integrate Google Analytics into our WordPress website.

As I finish this post, I want to write about a recent conversation I had with a friend / colleague who lives in the middle east in an energy (oil) rich country.

As we were discussing how solar is already hitting 2 cents per kwh price in certain locations, I commented that it is only a matter of time before batteries also get cheap enough that the grid will be optional or maybe even obsolete in some ways.

And to that, my friend replied saying something like “There will be no winners in solar. We will all be losers.”

My knee jerk reaction to that was: “No! We will all be winners because the entire world population is going to have access to power in a much more equitable (and highly distributed and fragmented) way, which will decrease inequity and increase justice (social and environmental) amongst nations and within each nation. So that is a good thing.”

Then we discussed how that transition might be challenging for some societies especially for oil rich middle eastern countries where power is so highly concentrated at the top. Hopefully that will not be the case. Something to pay attention to over the next years and decades…
