7 Things Worth Reading This Week (7/21/23)

NREL is reporting that bifacial perovskite solar cells hold the potential to produce higher energy yields at lower overall costs. They are finding that, ultimately, their dual nature allows them to outperform their monofacial counterparts. Though a bifacial perovskite solar module would cost more to manufacture it could end up being a better financial investment over time because it generates 10%-20% more power.

This article looks at how to secure financing for a community solar project. Topics include proving it is viable (including permitting and groundwork with utilities), pushing for policy changes, mapping out a strong plan (so that funders see what they want to be persuaded), and locating suitable funders.

Following 3 years of consecutive quarterly increases in solar PPA prices,  a recent report finds a 1% price decline from Q1 to Q2 this year in America, signs that they may be stabilizing. The report attributes this to the impact of the IRA and increased mobility in the solar supply chain, among other factors.

This article digs into how developers and landowners can work with solar companies to capitalize on “dead” or unusable spaces (like landfills and brownfields) for renewables development. It provides language for speaking to landowners that can enroll them in the idea, such as examining a host of site considerations and nurturing mutually beneficial partnerships.

Rocky Mountain Insitute offered updated climate policy scorecards for 20 states with significant emissions with diverse industries, geography, and political makeup. They looked at the states’ policies up to 2023 and tracked progress to 2030. Notable states included Washington, New York, Massachusetts, and Colorado.
