NREL has created a solar cell with 39.5% efficiency under 1-sun global illumination. This is groundbreaking given that it is the highest efficiency solar cell of any type, measured using standard 1-sun conditions. It reportedly has a simpler design and is ideal for new applications like “highly area-constrained applications or low-radiation space applications.” Researchers are also working hard to lower the cost of these kinds of cells.
