7 Things Worth Reading This Week (10/4/24)

Researchers propose a new method for the sizing of PV systems that does not rely on an anti-dump system and operates without the possibility of injecting power into the grid. The approach needs an estimate of the annual hourly profile and the minimum power demanded and the use of an irradiance meter and an electrical network analyzer.

EagleView research shows that about 20% of resi projects need a new roof, and up to 40% should have it before an install. This article weighs the pros and cons of both options: a standard system install along with a new asphalt shingle roof and an all-in-one solar tile system. It looks at factors like cost, ease of repair and install, labor, aesthetics, staying power, and more.

Q2 report from Wood Mack shows that across segments, U.S. developers commissioned 3 GW and 10.5 GWh of storage. This heralds the most active Q2 for system activations, trailing only Q4 2023 in total capacity. The top markets are CA, AZ and TX with 85% of installations. Predictions are for the deployment of 12.8 GW/ 36.9 GWh in 2024 across all sectors.

The Dept. of Commerce released its preliminary affirmative determination in the countervailing duty case relating to solar cell imports from SE Asia. They have listed the amounts to apply to goods from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. Preliminary amounts range from less than 1% to nearly 300%, and tariff rates are expected to increase further at the time of the final determinations.

Hitachi Energy plans to invest $155 million to expand its North American manufacturing capacity across three plants: $25 million for the VA transformer factory, $60 million to expand its PA high-voltage switchgear and breakers factory, and $70 million to construct a distribution transformer factory in Mexico.

CA Gov Newsom signed SB 1006 into law, requiring utilities to evaluate Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs) at least every two years in transmission planning. GETs offer California’s grid cost-saving, decarbonization and safety benefits: increase transmission capacity, reduce congestion and curtailment of renewable and zero-carbon resources, bolster reliability and flexibility, and more.
