7 Things Worth Reading This Week (6/29/23)

This article dives into how installers can more effectively model systems in the face of wild, variable, and challenging weather. It discusses current weather changes and trends, how to effectively use granular weather data, and how to maintain model accuracy and data due diligence.

The DOE is releasing $192+ million in additional funding to help businesses streamline battery recycling processes. This extends the Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Prize contest, launches an advanced research and development (R&D) consortium for consumer-product batteries, and builds on about $3 billion invested in EV and battery technologies from the Infrastructure Law.

Panasonic rolled out a new generation of their EverVolt resi battery system which offers a max of 18-kWh LFP battery capacity. Up to four EverVolt batteries can be stacked to a single EverVolt SmartBox, their new home energy management device to attain achieve 30 kW and 72 kWh.

First Solar is poised to release the first bifacial solar panel tapping advanced thin-film semiconductor tech. They’re calling it the Series 6 Plus Bifacial PV module and is built off of their Series 6 monofacial module platform. It has a transparent back contact, allowing for bifacial energy gain and infrared wavelengths of light to pass through rather than be absorbed as heat. Expectations are that it will lower the operational temp of the bifacial module for higher yield.

This article details five needed strategies for ensuring solar project success. The list includes: 1. Ensuring viability of a project by identifying optimal locations, 2) Cultivating strong partnerships with local stakeholders, 3) Enhancing project performance through streamlined engineering and transaction team operations, 4) Forming a team of accomplished project managers and contractors, 5) Obtaining the needed development capital.

Soligent’s Beyond Emissions Podcast features a Simpliphi Power rep dep diving into energy storage modeling for NEM 3.0 in CA. They go over the math and discuss how to size systems, emergency load battery backup, whole house backup, off grid systems, and larger commercial and industrial systems. The video is below.

In the sixth of a ten-part (and second portion of a 3 part series) SunCast/SolarAcademy solar conversation solar industry veteran Jon Bonanno and Ted Thomas, founder of Energized Strategies and former chair of the Arkansas Public Service Commission, talk about how these entities manage the transmission system. They look at the role of each and their goals and how they interact with one another. The video is below.
