7 Things Worth Reading This Week (3/24/23)

SPW spoke with folks rarely interviewed: resi installers, as in the tech in the field up on the roofs. They spoke about their best on-the-job tips. A number of them (engineers, crew leads, electrical leads, and installers) talked about install tips, favorite tools and gear/garb, and more.

CertainTeed, a building materials manufacturer, launched the low-profile solar roofing system Solstice. The offering is intended to simplify integration of solar technology into new and existing roofing systems with both shingles and traditional panels. The Solstice Shingle integrates with new or existing asphalt shingle roofing and apparently produces about as much energy as rack-mounted solar panels.

An international group of researchers has crunched the numbers and quantified floating solar’s potential around the world. Results show a generation potential of 9,434 TWh annually with the US leading with 1,911 TWh per year of potential, followed by China at 1,107 TWh per year, and Brazil at 865 TWh per year.

FERC is apparently going into hyperdrive around transmission reform, seeking to address the chronic interconnection bottlenecks. Their goals, says acting FERC Chairman Willie Phillips, are reliability, affordability and sustainability. FERC is also considering ways to bolster regional power sharing.

DSD Renewables explains the ABS financing model and why it is a more efficient finance vehicle offering a more permanent long-term debt option. Typically, the model was used for resi and utility and is now a possible fit for C&I. The result is community solar investment with lower risk for the financial sector.

In the first of a nine part SunCast/SolarAcademy solar conversation, Ted discusses the complex issue of interconnecting distributed generation to the grid environment, which takes too much time and costs too much money. The guest, Ted Thomas, who is the founder of Energized Strategies and former chair of the Arkansas Public Service Commission, talks about the different acronyms and state bodies that regulate the wholesale and retail sales of electricity and natural gas, and how jurisdiction varies across different states. The video is below.

In this third of nine excerpts from a SunCast/SolarAcademy solar conversation between solar industry veterans Jon Bonanno, Kerim Baran, and CEO of Caelux Scott Graybeal, the three men talk about what Caelux is doing to successfully integrate their perovskite technology with existing panel manufacturers in the US and abroad – in a way that adds value for all stakeholders. The video is below.
