6 Things Worth Reading This Week (3/3/23)

The EIA just released encouraging stats about renewables and solar growth in America. In 2022 almost 23% of US electrical generation was from renewable energy sources, which represented a 12.37% increase from 2021. Solar was the fastest-growing category, showing an increase of 24.24% in 2022.

Solar Builder looks at PV hazard control and UL 3741, with a focus on subsection 690.12(B)(2) regarding controlling conductors within the array boundary. Their discussion includes walking through salient information the NEC has released in recent years, an overview of UL 3741, and what to consider when applying it (including clarifying points of confusion).

Five states in the central US are looking at bills that grant incumbent utilities right-of-first-refusal to build transmission lines that grid operators open up for bidding, effectively excluding independent transmission companies. This legislation comes in anticipation of the expected transmission buildout needed for better grid reliability and renewables deployment.

Trina Solar has rolled out a new generation of rooftop modules: the Vertex S+ n-type dual-glass product line with output power that reaches 445 W. Available in monofacial with a white rear encapsulant and a transparent bifacial, this shift to n-type i-TOPCon cells means about 10% extra energy over 30 years plus a 50% lower initial degradation and 11% lower annual power attenuation.

We recently hosted Joe Tanner, Director of Sales at Enact Systems, on SolarAcademy. Enact Systems is one of the leading solar design & proposal software tools out in the market. Its platform enables sales teams to design, price and sell remotely, finalize contracts and track project execution. End-customers can also leverage Enact’s platform to manage their solar and energy storage transition and track financial outcomes. More than a thousand small to large sized solar installers use Enact in the US as well as many others across 22 other countries in the world. Joe shared with us Enact’s company background, what makes Enact unique, what’s new at Enact in Q4 of 2022 as well as Enact’s capabilities by giving us a thorough demo of the software platform. The video is below.

In this first of nine excerpts from a SunCast/SolarAcademy solar conversation between solar industry veterans Jon Bonanno, Kerim Baran, and CEO of Caelux Scott Graybeal, the three discuss an anecdote about the scope and scale of the European, American, and Chinese solar markets over a decade ago. The video is below.
